The Executive Council of Rutgers AAUP-AFT Stands in Solidarity with United Teachers Los Angeles
WHEREAS more than 30,000 Los Angeles teachers are on strike, fighting for quality public education for LA’s nearly 700,000 students;
AND United Teachers Los Angeles members are battling the privatizing corporate agenda of the superintendent and the school board by demanding smaller class sizes, better student-counselor ratios, and an end to punitive discipline;
AND Just like Rutgers’s faculty and staff, LA’s educators have a vision for a better, more just educational system; while, just like Rutgers’s management, the LA school board claims that educators’ vision is unaffordable even as they sit on huge unrestricted cash reserves;
BE IT RESOLVED, The Rutgers Council of AAUP-AFT Chapters calls on Superintendent Austin Beutner and the LA Unified School District to give up the failed, unjust privatization agenda, and negotiate in good faith with UTLA,
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, The Rutgers Council of AAUP-AFT Chapters stands in solidarity with the teachers of UTLA and allied unions; we share their commitment to quality public education, with security, equity, and dignity for teachers and their students,
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, The Rutgers Council of AAUP-AFT Chapters representing more than 8,000 faculty, grad workers, PostDocs, and EOF counselors donates $500 to the Tacos for Teachers initiative of the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools, with any funds not used to feed picketers going to the UTLA strike solidarity fund.
