College Avenue Info Picketing for Job Security and Academic Freedom
October 31 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm
Last week, our colleagues on Cook and Douglass campuses held a successful picket at the Douglass student center, to draw attention to our ongoing contract campaign and to educate students and staff about the issues driving our bargaining. Hundreds of students stopped by to talk with AAUP-AFT members, from graduate employees to faculty, about what the contract campaign meant to them, and why they were concerned enough to turn up on a chilly morning to demonstrate. All of those hundreds of students learned about PTL’s contingent employment, the lack of secure funding packages for graduate employees, and the need for race and gender equity in hiring, retention and promotion amongst all ranks at Rutgers University.
As bargaining continues to move forward, its more important than ever to participate in contract campaign actions. On October 31st, the English, History and Language departments in the Academic Building will be anchoring another informational picketing action on College Avenue, on Voorhees Mall, focused around the theme of job security for PTLs, graduate employees, and NTT faculty as well as academic freedom. Sign up here for a picketing shift: we’re asking all members to sign up for at least one 30 minute “shift.”
We want to have a large, visible and defiant presence to remind central administration that we are in this fight to win real advances for the most contingent among our membership. Join us!
